It began in 1991 as the Harmarville Hoops Classic, created by the fundraising arm of Harmarville Rehabilitation Center, and held beside Three Rivers Stadium.
Known for a time as the Eat'n Park Hoops Classic, the now simply named Hoops Classic has become a part of the Pittsburgh sports folklore throughout its
years of existence.
The Hoops Classic is a double elimination 3-on-3 tournament for players ages 8 and up, so each team has at least two games. In addition to the hoops action, this event is also known for testing basketball skills, with individual competitions such as free throw, 3 point shooting, and the popular 2 man hot shot contests. In addition to thousands of spectators and players, the
Hoops Classic has plenty of food and drink, and activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Many local basketball stars and future superstars, including Swin Cash and a young Lavar Arrington, participated as high school players in this event. Throughout the years, it has garnered support from local pro teams, colleges, and even had games monitored by the United States Marines. After holding the event at several local locations such as Station Square, The Waterfront, and the last few years between PNC Park & Heinz Field, the
17th annual Hoops Classic
returns to the Galleria at Pittsburgh Mills along Route 28 near Tarentum, putting the event even closer to its Harmarville roots.
